There are so many types of car warranties-dealership warranties, bumper-to-bumper warranties, rust and deterioration warranties, and powertrain warranties, just to name a few. So, what's an extended warranty do, and should I buy extended warranty on a used car?

Vehicle value contacts, commonly known as extended warranties, can give you peace of mind and potentially save you money in the long run. There are lots of things to consider when you're offered this warranty, though. Below, the team at Century Automotive is sharing our advice on extended warranties for the drivers of Huntsville, Florence, and Cullman, AL.

What is an Extended Warranty?

Car manufacturers provide warranties with their vehicles as a type of insurance. These warranties offer to pay for repairs and services that meet specified criteria for a number of years. An extended warranty is exactly what it sounds like-it adds years onto a car warranty.

An extended warranty is not unique to used cars, but it is often available when you purchase one from a dealership. For a general sense, several of the manufacturers that our dealership is most familiar with offer extended warranties that last for 75,000 to 120,000 miles.

You'll also find similar types of warranties available through car clubs or your auto insurance. What mileage they cover, how long they last, and what repairs they'll handle vary as well. If you don't get a warranty through a dealership, do your homework, because it may have narrower coverage.

What do Extended Warranties Cover?

If you should buy extended warranty for your used car, it is likely to list many parts and systems. Check out the Buyer's Guide that the dealership offers to see what might be included.

Extended warranties could cover some or all of the following areas:

  • Engine and transmission malfunctions
  • Navigation systems and onboard computers
  • Power seats and electronic systems
  • Roadside assistance

An extended warranty typically doesn't cover wear and tear parts. That is, parts that are understood to require replacement in a relatively predictable time. Brake pads or tires are examples.

To Buy or Not to Buy (An Extended Warranty)

So, at the end of the day, should you buy extended warranty for your used car? There are good reasons to want the assurance that a good extended warranty provides, but they're not the right choice for every driver.

Here are some reasons why you might choose to purchase an extended warranty:

  • You want to know that you're covered in case of emergency
  • You estimate that it will result in savings
  • You're buying an older car that's likely to need more repairs

There are good reasons not to buy an extended warranty, too:

  • Your vehicle's original warranty is still active
  • You don't plan to own the car long enough to use much of the warranty
  • You don't mind factoring in unpredictable repair needs

When in doubt, ask your dealership for their professional input. They'll have additional insight on the car and the warranty's specifics.
